Racing (Sportsman Foxberg)

OBJECTIVE:
  1. To provide a racing event which is attractive to both sport flyers and experienced competitors.
  2. Will equalize the "equipment factor".
  3. Serve as an entry level event.
  4. Is simple to do.
  5. Provide spectator appeal through close racing speeds and colorful, realistic models. AMA Control Line Racing Unified Rules apply to this event except as amended below.
  6. This event shall be designated as a sportsman only event.
  7. There may be a separate expert class in addition to the current sportsman class . It will be designated as follows : Anyone who has raced previously in this event or similar events and who has qualified with a time below 7:00 minutes for 100 laps is considered an expert and therefore cannot compete in the sportsman class.
  8. Once designated as an Expert ,neither the owner of the model or the model itself will be allowed in the sportsman class.
  9. As per the new class designation “ expert ” there will be one 200 lap feature race for the expert pilots only with no less than 2 planes up and no more than 3 planes up at a time.
  10. There will be only one trophy for the winner of the expert class at this time.
  11. Any entrant whose deportment is considered abhorrent or unacceptable or in violation of the AMA rule regarding unsportsmanlike conduct shall be immediately disqualified.

THE PLANE:

  1. Must be a stock Goldberg "Shoestring", "Cosmic Wind", or "Buster" built from either a kit or as a direct copy of a kit. Brodak's ,Buster , Shoesting, Cosmic Wind, Lightning Streak, Flite Streak or RSM's Miss Sarah" and the Top Flite ARF Flite Streak are permissible.
  2. Defective kit parts may be replaced.
  3. Construction changes which serve to strengthen the structure are allowed.
  4. Changes which alter the shape of the model or lighten the structure are not allowed.
  5. Leadouts must exit the wing tip at the location shown on the plan.
  6. Landing gear must exit the fuselage at the location shown on the plan.
    Aluminum landing gear may be substituted.
  7. The method of attaching the gear is optional.
  8. Two main wheels are at least one and one half inches (1-1/2") are required. Wheels must be commercially available.
  9. The model should be painted to resemble a racer. A canopy outline is required.
  10. Internal line connectors or anything else which is intended to obtain a distinct advantage or which violates the spirit of the event will not be allowed.
  11. Entrants AMA number must appear on the upper right wing and be permanently affixed.

FUEL TANK:

  1. Fuel tanks will be a commercially available, 2oz. plastic tank, such as a Dubro or Sullivan SS-#2.
  2. Fast fills are prohibited.
  3. The fuel tank may not be pressurized other than bending 1/8 inch o.d. vents into the slipstream. It may be a uniflow system.
  4. The tank must be mounted ahead of the wing leading edge and on the outboard side of the fuselage.
  5. The tank must be filled through an 1/8 inch o.d. tube. A jet fill attachment is allowable.

THE ENGINE:

  1. Must be a stock Fox 35 stunt or Brodak 25 or OS LA 25.ABC piston and cylinder assemblies, hemi heads and stuffer backplates, even if manufactured by Fox, are disallowed.
  2. Head and backplate screws may be replaced with socket head screws.
  3. The needle valve assembly may be replaced. It may not be smaller than the
    Fox unit.
  4. An engine disassembly and inspection may be ordered after the race by the C.D. to check for infractions of the rules.

GENERAL:

  1. Hot gloves, hot fingers, and electrical, spring, or mechanical starters of any kind are prohibited.
  2. Shut-offs may be installed on the model, but they may not be used during the race.
  3. No safety thongs or hats are to be used during a race.
  4. The use of Sullivan Pylon brand/type line connectors is recommended.
  5. Lines must be .015 minimum stranded. Line length is 60' +/- 6" measured from the center of the plane to the center of the handle.
  6. Pull test will be 35 pounds.
  7. The race will consist of 100 lap heat races with two pit stops required. The feature will be 200 laps with three (3) pit stops required.
  8. In the event that a contestant completes the required number of laps before making the minimum number of pit stops, timing will continue until the contestant has completed one full lap following the last required pit stop
  9. Fuel will contain no more than 10% (by volume) nitro-methane and minimum 24 % oil (by volume) with the remaining being methanol and will be supplied by the contestest management10% nitromethane, 29% castor fuel will also be supplied, entrant may use either fule or a mix of the two at his option.
  10. Planes will be required to rise off ground (ROG). No hand launching.
  11. Inexperianced pilots may be paired together for races
  12. Once a race has started pilots must remain in the circle until the race is finished
  13. Any one entrant may act as pilot, mechanic or assistant for no more than 3 airplanes.
  14. 1 entry per person in this event.
  15. Electric starters are disallowed.
  16. All Pit Personel must wear approved helmets
  17. There will be a clear start and finish signal for all races
  18. Due to time constraints we are asking each contestant to be ready by 1:00 pm. the day of the race , which will facilitate the completion of the racing events in a timely manor.
  19. It is advisable for all contesents  to read the AMA rules and regulations for racing , which is available on the AMA website

OBJECTIVE:

  1. To provide a racing event, which is attractive to both, sport flyers and experienced competitors.

  4. Is simple to do.
  5. Provide spectator appeal through close racing speeds and colorful, realistic models. AMA Control Line Racing Unified Rules apply to this event except as amended below.
  6. This event shall be designated as a sportsman only event.
  7. There may be a separate expert class in addition to the current sportsman class. It will be designated as follows: Anyone who has raced previously in this event or similar events and who has qualified with a lap count of greater than 124 laps in a 7 ½ minute heat race will be designated an expert and therefore cannot compete in the sportsman class.
  8. Once designated as an Expert, neither the owner of the model or the model itself will be allowed in the sportsman class.
  9. As per the new class designation “ expert “ there will be one 15 minute feature race for the expert pilots only with no less than 2 planes up and no more than 3 planes up at a time.
  10. There will be only one trophy for the winner of the expert class at this time.
  11. Any entrant whose deportment is considered abhorrent or unacceptable or in violation of the AMA rule regarding unsportsmanlike conduct shall be immediately disqualified.

THE PLANE:

  1. Must be a PDQ "Flying Clown", Brodak "Flying Clown" or "Circus Prince" or a faithful replica.
  2. The landing gear must have one 2" wheel or two 1" wheels (dual wheels must be spaced 5" apart, and the landing gear must remain on the aircraft for the entire race.

FUEL TANK:

  1. Fuel tank must not exceed one fluid ounce.
  2. Fuel tank must be externally mounted in front of the leading edge, and on the outboard side of the fuselage.
  3. Fuel will contain no more than 10% (by volume) nitro-methane and have a minimum 20 % oil (by volume) with the remaining being methanol. and will be supplied by the contest management on a limited basis ie: approx. 4 ounces per heat race
  4. Shut-offs may be installed on the model, but they may not be used during the race
  5. Jet fills are permitted.

THE ENGINE:

  1. This year we are permitting two engines, the Brodak .15 Control Line version and the OS LA .15 Control Line Version (RC engine with UC parts permitted) with no internal modifications allowed on either engine.
  2. Legal modifications will be : replacing the back plate with a metal one

  3. : replacing the r/c carburetor with the venturi of your choice
    : install the needle valve of your choice
    : install head shims
    Venturi ID to be 6mm, .236 in maximum. Spray bar OD to be .146 in minimum.

General:

  4. Pull test will be 20 pounds.
  5. Two heat races shall be flown by each contestant with a maximum of three flyers up per heat. Highest lap count places you in the finals.
  6. Any one entrant may act as pilot, mechanic or assistant for no more than 3 airplanes.
  7. Heats shall be 7 1/2 minutes Finals shall be 15 minutes
  8. Race begins after a 2-minute countdown, with all engines stopped for at least the last 30 seconds of the countdown.
  9. Hand launching is permitted. Electric starters are disallowed.
  10. All AMA safety rules shall apply with the C.D and E.D. having the ultimate say as to eligibility of aircraft and engines.
  11. Inexperianced pilots may be paired together for races
