The PA-18 Super Cub was first introduced in 1949. Early Super Cubs were powered by a 0-235 Lycoming producing 108 HP and was equipped with 3-position flaps. The most common Super Cubs were built with 150 – 160 horsepower Lycoming engines.
Many modifications have been made including extended flaps, wheels up to 38” diameter/soft tires for landing on sand/gravel bars and sheet metal belly pans to reduce damage to the fabric covered fuselages by debris from unimproved fields. The most radical modification is the bottom wing that renders the Super Cub to “Sesquiplane” status, better known as the Super Cub Biplane. The wing was added to improve take-off performance from high altitude landing sights.
