Quick Overview

The Electra is designed primarily of balsa and ply and incorporates the standard construction style of the Dare/Brodak kit line. However, the Electra is a rather large model with a wingspan of 60” and an overall length of 63”. The dedicated electric powered design uses (4) 400 class Outrunner motors and a single 3 cell Lipoly battery. Guidance is simple 4 channel R/C using 4 micro-servos and a full range Rx. Though designed as an airliner, the Electra can be easily converted to the P-3 Orion by the builder for those who prefer to fly military aircraft.

Details

The L-188 Electra first flew in 1957 and was the first large turboprop airliner built in the US. The Electra could carry up to 98 passengers with a range of up to 2,770 miles. Powered by 4, Allison 501-D13 Turboprop engines with 13’-6” diameter propellers the short field and high-altitude field performance surpassed many of the jet aircraft of the era. Many Electra’s were reconfigured into freighters, among other roles, and many are still in service today. The Electra was also the basis for the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
